Finishing a basement is a great way to add livable square footage to your home without having to build a new addition. And while finishing a basement often seems like a DIY job, there are aspects of it that require expertise from professionals. To help you started, we’ve rounded up some essential tips for finishing a basement.

           1. Consult Professionals

Before you start the basement project, consult a professional. Advantage Services offers full design services for the basements we install. Before getting started, make sure you are up-to-date on codes for basements, as most need to have at least seven-foot ceilings to meet regulations. You will also want to hire a professional electrical contractor, HVAC contractor, and a good plumbing contractor.

           2. Design Strategically

When you’re designing the basement space, consider putting any bedrooms you are adding around the perimeter of the basement to ensure that they have a window. But if your new basement space is going to be used primarily for TV-watching and gaming, it’s okay if you don’t have much natural light in those areas. (And there won’t be any glare on your screens!)

            3. Framing

Basements in Brighton are generally required to have floating walls vs standard wall framing. The local building department will let you know if they are required.

           4. Fix Moisture Problems Before Adding Walls

The biggest issue with basement spaces is moisture. Before you put walls up, make sure any moisture issues are taken care of. You certainly don’t want mold growing within your walls because of moisture.

           5. Choose Flooring Carefully

Hopefully, you never experience any leaks in your basement, but since basements are the lowest level of your house, be careful when choosing flooring. Many homeowners opt for tile or laminate flooring that looks similar to wood flooring in their basements. Confirm your concrete floors are flat and do not have raised areas if installing laminate flooring. If needed, the concrete can be leveled or ground down, but this can get costly. Carpeting has its advantages, like warm floors and hiding uneven concrete.

           6. Invest in Lighting

Most basements lack natural light, which makes the lighting you add to the space even more important. You probably need more lighting than you think, and a nice light fixture can go a long way in making your space feel more inviting. Consider adding can lights to your new basement. At Advantage Services llc we like to add at least four to eight can lights per room, depending on the size of the room.

           7. Fire Blocking

Fire blocking is an essential part of finishing a basement. The new codes require all exterior walls and soffits to have fire blocking and every ten linear feet. Feel free to call us with any questions you may have; we will be glad to help. Typically, the building department will have free fire-blocking handouts when you pull your permit.

           8. Install Egress Windows

Part of basement building codes requires the installation of egress windows. Egress windows are windows that allow people to escape in the case of an emergency. Every bedroom will require an egress window.

           9. Leave Space for Storage

The one thing that people often miss after finishing a basement is the storage space the unfinished basement used to provide, so don’t forget to leave a space in your basement for storage. With a few shelves and cabinets, you won’t have to completely give up storage space — it’s the best of both worlds!

         Planing your kitchen Remodel Timeline

When planning a kitchen remodel timeline, most homeowners want to know the best time to start in order to be completed by a specific date. Therefore, at Advantage, we often get asked the question, “How long does it take to remodel a kitchen?”

There are 3 basic phases of a kitchen remodel: design, planning and production. Your timeline will depend on the size and type of kitchen remodel, but it generally takes between four to six weeks to remodel, if you do not include the planning and design phases.

PLANNING AND DESIGN TIMELINE OF A KITCHEN REMODEL

If you are considering a kitchen remodel, it is extremely important to take as much time as you need to plan. Each and every detail will need to be thought through and planned for, and you want the end result to be exactly as you’ve envisioned it. If you have the ability to print out or email pictures of elements that you would like to be incorporated into the design of your kitchen, please do this. Pictures can save on design time and ensure accuracy in communicating your vision.

Advantage Services ll can provide accurate drawings to help you visualize your remodeled living space.

It is very important to work with a design/build company that can show you design and product options, and their associated costs. It is also important to clearly communicate your budget to your design build company so they can help you keep watch on your budget throughout the process. At Advantage Services llc we provide our clients with 3D renderings of their kitchen design so that they know what their future kitchen will look like. We believe this service is in the best interest of the client-provider relationship. After all, it is much easier to make a change to a drawing than it is to make a change after the project is underway. Clear communication is paramount through the remodel process, and Advantage is committed to making every reasonable effort to ensure the process is free of unexpected issues and unmet expectations.

During the design phase, you will be able to pick out your selections for your new kitchen. Countertops, backsplashes, appliances, lighting, drawer pulls, cabinet color and style – all of these details are decided before demolition begins. After all of these details are collected, the project moves to the planning phase.

The planning phase is where the project is broken down into parts. Each part of the renovation process is given tasks with dates, provider, and a materials list. This becomes the master schedule for your project. You will be provided with the schedule, so you know what to expect, who to expect, and when to expect them by. This is also important because every project has milestones, and once a milestone is completed, you should expect to be billed for the services provided related to that milestone. Your project representative will show you this schedule with milestones up front to make sure that both the schedule and the billing milestones are suitable for you.

            SPECIALTY MATERIALS WITH WAIT TIMES

When you are planning for a kitchen remodel, remember that specialty appliances and other specialty items may have a wait time. It is important to factor in this wait time into the master schedule. Certain tile and stone products and custom-fabricated furniture may also have a wait time associated with them. Advantage offers custom and semi-custom cabinets, and these can take between four to eight weeks to receive. Stock, or ready-made cabinets can have a shorter wait time, but still need to have at least 2 weeks set aside.

If you want granite countertops, your Advantage representative will go with you to select the actual slab you like. This guarantees you are getting exactly what you want. This is a part of the Advantage Services llc design process. If there is a unique tile backsplash you love or want to have custom-designed, or if you are using custom tile or other specialty material for flooring, this will need to be ordered before the demolition process begins as specialty tile and flooring can also have a wait time.

PHASES OF THE KITCHEN REMODEL PROCESS

After you’ve approved (and hopefully fallen in love with!) the design of your new kitchen, you’ve selected all your materials, and you’re happy with the suggested schedule, your remodel project can get started. Your remodel schedule should reflect approximately 4-6 weeks of work. We’ve divided the work into 6 steps:

Step One: Removal of Existing Kitchen & Evaluation

Removal of the old kitchen, including removing old appliances, cabinetry, countertops, flooring, etc. happens on the first day. After everything has been removed, we evaluate the floors and ceilings and address any modifications that need to be made with you. Modifications that need to be made are considered change orders, therefore, we will not move forward on the project until we’ve discussed and agreed on how to proceed.

Step Two: Rough-in All Electrical, Set up / Install Mechanicals

The mechanical installation is the second stage of the remodel process and can take about five days to complete. It is during this step of the kitchen remodel timeline that new plumbing, HVAC and electric is installed. Most kitchen remodels require new light fixtures at the very least. Some projects require all new electric completely. Each location for outlets, lighting, switches, and appliance power feeds are clearly marked. This process removes any guesswork for the electrician and enables him to wire and install the new system in a timely manner. If requested, speaker wire, cable wire, and other home automation product wiring will be added at this time. Most projects require an inspection prior to adding insulation and covering with drywall. Inspection will be scheduled and completed when all plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and home automation installation is complete.

Step Three: Insulation, Drywall Installation, Finishing & Priming, Flooring

Upon completion of the mechanical phase and its inspection, we will begin insulating your kitchen, hanging the drywall, finishing the drywall and priming for paint. Flooring installation follows (if you are replacing the existing floor).

Step Four: Cabinet Installation, Countertop Templating, Fabrication, and Installation

For many clients, the day cabinetry is installed is a very exciting day! The kitchen cabinets are installed with precision, and crown molding is added to finish the look. Next on the list is templating the countertops. The countertop area is measured with precision to ensure your new countertops fit like a glove. On average, two weeks will pass between the time the countertop is templated to the time the countertop is installed.

Step Five: Final Interior Finish Stage and Painting

The interior finishing phase typically includes installation of the plumbing fixtures, decorative backsplashes, trim, and baseboard. Painting is completed during this phase as well.

Step Six: Installation of Electrical Fixtures & Appliances and Final Cleanup

This time is used for small touch-ups and fine-tuning to ensure that all your expectations were met.

           Removing the Old Toilet

Start by shutting off your water supply, and make sure to confirm the water shut-off is working correctly and not leaking, if needed turn off the main water supply and switch out the shut-off before you install the new toilet, flush the toilet to remove most of the water then use a shop vac to get all the water out of the toilet bowl and the tank before removing it. Next, cut the silicone seal between the floor and the toilet. Remove the 2 nuts and bolts holding the old bowl in place, we find it helpful to set the toilet on a garbage bag, so the wax seal does not damage your flooring. Remove the old wax ring from the flange using a putty knife to remove any excess wax. Stuff a rag or old towel into the hole, so you don't end up with sewer gas in your home. Toilets do not have a water trap like most plumbing fixtures.

           Prepare the Flange

Before you install the new toilet, remove the bolts from the plumbing flange and take a look at it. If it's damaged or doesn't look to be in good shape, you may need to purchase a flange repair kit to fix it or replace it. Your flange should be slightly higher than your flooring, so you may need to add spacers if you replaced the flooring. Now, you can remove your rag or towel. You'll also need to replace the wax seal; at Advantage Services LLC we use extra high wax rings on all of our toilet installs to make sure there are not any leaks. It is good practice to replace the water line whenever you install a new toilet.

Put the New Toilet in Place

Now, it's time to begin the installation of the new toilet bowl. First, lower it over the anchor bolts, being careful not to rock the toilet back and forth too much so you do not damage the flange or the wax ring. We like to let the weight of the toilet compress the wax ring and then lightly push down evenly on the toilet to allow it to come in contact with the flooring. Once the bowl is firmly in place, install the washers, nuts, and caps over the bolts, but be careful not to tighten them too much; you can crack the porcelain. We use shims to confirm the toilet is level and will not rock. A rocking toilet will allow the wax ring to lose it’s seal, then you will have issues down the road, and you do not want that.

           Install the upper Tank

Attach the tank to the bowl by sliding the bolts through the slots on the tank and lining them up with the slots on the bowl. Use a wrench to ensure the bolts are tight, but again, don't over-tighten them so much that the porcelain breaks, but they must be tight to create the seal to the tank. One of the most common reason toilet tanks leaks is due to under-tightening the tank bolts. Just be careful and you'll be fine.

Add the Water Supply and a Seat

Once all of the bolts are tight and the toilet is secure, you can now reconnect the water supply. Turn on your main water supply and flush the toilet a few times to ensure it's working properly and there's no leakage at the base. New code changes require the toilets to be sealed to the floor. At Advantage Services LLC we use clear or white silicone to create a water-tight seal. You can then install a seat on the toilet, and it's ready to use.

           What brand do we install?

Regarding brands we use, our standard is Kohler. We have found Kohler toilets are high quality and have fewer issues compared to other brands we have installed, and are affordably priced

Renovating a kitchen is a home improvement thrill ride. Each twist and turn brings new excitement as design elements are chosen and materials are selected. When you reach the part of the ride where you’ve found a contractor you can trust and a design that fits your budget and style, it’s time to throw your hands up and scream with glee.

However, there is one part of the ride that can be extremely scary and often intimidates many people from renovating their kitchen. Staying on budget can prove to be particularly challenging for a lot of homeowners. Without the proper precautions, you may find yourself barreling off the tracks and in a heap of trouble.

According to a recent study by Houzz, only 4% of home remodeling projects come in under budget. So how can you limit your chances of blowing the budget on your kitchen renovation?

At Advantage Services llc, we understand that sticking to a budget takes a cooperative effort between the designer, contractor, and the homeowner. After a design is finalized, a design contract is detailed to not only provide a 3-D rendering of the project but to also provide a list of materials and known expenses. Although there is a chance of small unexpected twists and turns, meticulous planning can capture a lot of the factors that impact the overall cost of your renovation.

Material upgrades can be one of the big influences that can cause the bottom to drop out from your budget planning process. One of the most invigorating parts of the process comes when a client begins to pick out specific countertops, hardware, lighting, and various components. This is where a project could go completely off-track. During the design and proposal stage, your kitchen remodeler and the designer will give generalized pricing guidelines for material costs. Even if mid-grade products are anticipated, choosing several premium products could increase your project costs by 15-20% or more.

Most kitchen renovation projects we partake of include, at least, one type of upgrade, despite a thorough design discovery phase. Clients often later fall in love with a style of lighting, trim element, or countertop material that wasn’t originally planned for by either party. Since kitchen remodeling choices remain in homes for decades, homeowners often gravitate to selecting upgrades mid-project in fear of future regrets of denying themselves improvements.

In order to keep your kitchen renovation project from coming to a screeching halt, we have the following suggestions:

plenty of time with your contractor during the initial planning phase. Discuss material options and ask to see physical samples of products.

sure your kitchen designer or contractor informs you of the overall cost increases of upgrades. Materials measured in smaller units like square or linear feet can add up quickly. Ask for the total upgrade cost.

for a 15% or more contingency in your budget. That way you won’t be thrown for a loop with extra costs.

Whether part of upgrading aesthetics or preparing a home for resale, kitchen renovations are one of the most likely and popular of home improvement projects. Don’t be intimidated, you’ll find the experience is bound to amaze. If you’re ready to jump in and buckle up, we’d be excited to enjoy the ride alongside you.

What Is The Best Height To Use For A Shower Tile Border?

Advantage Services explains, from a design standpoint, what is the proper height to install a tiled shower border? Denver's choice for remodeling!

Where should you position your shower tile border? Well, it depends!

Question: From a design standpoint, what is the proper height to install a tiled shower border?

Decorative tile borders set the tone for your entire design. This is a very good question since the border makes or breaks the tile design. Border tiles are the most exciting part of a design. They add the finishing touch to the shower, and it is very important that they are installed at the right height based on the look you are trying to achieve.

            Eye Level:

If the tile is not being carried throughout (meaning tiling the wall or chair rail) then the border should be installed at eye level.

Eye level ranges from between 59 and 64 inches. Installing the border in-between these numbers will give you a healthy height.

            Carry Chair Rail Throughout:

If you are installing the same tile in the shower as you are using to create a border on the wall, consider one of these options.

            •

Continue the chair rail through the shower. This will keep the room open, without interrupting the flow. Your space will look and feel larger than it really is.

            •

Select a border tile that is appropriate for wainscoting or chair rail. (Proper height for wainscoting or chair rail is between 30 and 36 inches. This method is exciting and unexpected. Doing the application in this manner will really open up your space.)

            •

If you wish to stay away from this style, feel free to use mosaic or any other type of accent tile. Make sure that if you choose this route, cut tile sheets so that the border height is at least 3 inches tall. Too thin of a border style strip will get lost in the rest of the room; since it is lacking a three-dimensional depth to set it apart from the wall tile.

            Things To Consider:

Borders have been trending to vertical from horizontal and when a vertical option is chosen 9 out out of 10 times we install the border centered with the valve body. Drywall Repair How To:

Drywall repair is a common home maintenance task that many homeowners can do themselves. The skill set, tools and techniques required for drywall repair depend on the size of the hole. If you can flip a fried egg, you can easily patch a small nick in your drywall, but it gets trickier as the holes get bigger. But don’t worry; Mr. Handyman is here to help! Download our Drywall Repair Guide for step-by-step instructions.

           Drywall Repair Techniques

The size of the hole will determine what method of repair you’ll use. You may not need all of these tools – before you purchase anything, reference the guidelines below to see what you’ll need. You’ll find the required materials listed with each step. Drywall tape is available in paper or mesh, select mesh if you have a choice. The tools in bold are required for each step, regardless of hole size.

HOW TO PATCH A SMALL HOLE (ANYTHING SMALLER THAN A NICKEL)

Small holes in drywall are simple to fix. Any hole larger than a nickel should be repaired with the instructions under Medium or Large hole. Use spackle or joint compound to fill the hole. If you’re using joint compound, buy it pre-mixed for small DIY jobs. Spackle may shrink as it dries in larger holes and may require an extra application. Joint compound may run out or bulge as it sets and will require sanding and a second application.

Materials: For this job you’ll need joint compound or spackle.

          •	Clean the hole by removing any loose drywall debris.

          •	Use a carpenter’s knife to put a beveled edge around the circumference of the hole if it’s larger than a dime.

          •	Use a damp rag to wipe off any dust.

          •	Use a putty knife to fill the hole with spackle or joint compound, and then smear the filler to make it flush with the wall.

          •	Allow the filler to air-dry.

          •	Lightly sand the area with sandpaper and apply a second coat. Sand once dry.

          •	Prime and paint over the filled hole.

HOW TO PATCH A MEDIUM HOLE (ANYTHING SMALLER THAN SIX INCHES)

For a professional finish follow the instructions under Large hole. This method requires finesse to feather the joint compound into the rest of the wall – if not done correctly, you will see a slight bulge in the wall. You must feather the repair area (gradually reduce the thickness outward) when applying the joint compound and in the sanding stage. Use a drywall patch that is slightly larger than the hole that needs to be repaired. You can purchase these at your local hardware store. Look for a kit, which will include everything you need.

Materials: For this job you’ll need a drywall patch and joint compound.

          •	Sand and clean the area around the hole where the patch will contact the wall.

          •	Apply the adhesive side of the patch to the wall.

          •	Cover the patch with a joint compound.

          • Use a crisscross pattern with your putty knife to apply the compound.

          • Apply enough compound to cover the patch and have enough to feather.

          • Once dry, lightly sand and apply another coat.

          •	Sand the dry second coat with sandpaper.

          • Feather the edges to blend the repair into the wall.

          •	Prime and paint.

HOW TO PATCH A LARGE HOLE (ANYTHING LARGER THAN SIX INCHES)

Take your time, and be careful not to nick any wires or plumbing during installation. Although this method requires more tools, the final result is more professional looking.

Materials: For this job you’ll need a scrap piece of drywall, furring strips, joint tape, drywall screws, and joint compound.

          •	Cut out a square piece of new drywall that’s slightly larger than the hole.

          •	Put this piece on top of the area that needs to be patched, and trace around it with a pencil.

          •	Use a drywall saw to cut out the damaged drywall along your trace lines.

          •	Place the furring strips through the hole. Pull them tight against the backside of the drywall and anchor them from the front with drywall screws.

          • Make sure the screws firmly anchor the furring strips to the back of the drywall. The screw heads should be flush or slightly dimpled.

          •	Set the new drywall patch in place and secure it to the furring strips with drywall screws.

          •	Hold everything together by bedding in drywall tape with joint compound along the edges.

          •	Cover everything with drywall joint compound.

          •	Lightly sand once dry and apply a second coat.

          •	Sand the second coat once it dries.

          •	Prime and paint.

            TIPS

          •	Apply a third layer of joint compound for a smoother look after the second layer has been sanded.

          •	For patches, spread the joint compound over an area much wider than the patch so you have material to feather.

          •	Wear a dust mask while sanding joint compound or have someone capture dust with a vacuum.

          •	If you’re repairing textured drywall, use a can of wall texture spray before you paint.

          •	In a pinch, use a heavy-duty paint stirring stick in place of a furring strip.

          •	Never skip the priming step – joint compound cannot be painted on top of. Some spackles may have primer already in them. These are best for small holes only.

           Professional Drywall Repair

Drywall repair is pretty straight forward. If you’re up for the challenge and have the right tools, it can be a satisfying DIY repair. However, if you don’t have the tools, if the hole requires new drywall replacement, or if the entire drywall sheet needs to be replaced, hiring a professional is the next best option.

A tub-to-shower conversion can bring you a host benefits you’ll enjoy for years to come. Here are some of them:

           •	Bathroom will appear larger

          – Without the tub in the way, your bathroom floor will have a better flow, creating a seamless look to make your bathroom appear larger.

           •	Value

          – A tub-to-shower conversion will increase value of your home; the trends have been going from tubs to showers for years now and are expected to continue.

           •	Improves accessibility

          – A shower accommodates the needs and abilities of everyone in your home by offering a safe way to enter a tub, without the need to climb into it.

           •	Easier to clean

          – Tubs have a lot of nooks and crevices where mold and mildew can grow, which makes cleaning a hassle. Walk-in showers are more streamlined, making them easier to clean.

           •	Keeps water down the drain

          – No more standing water. Shower floors are sloped toward the drain, typically on one end of the shower floor to send water down the drain and away from the bathroom. Just be sure to position the shower head so the water stays within the splash zone.

           •	Seamless design

          – Eliminating the tub gives your bathroom those clean lines you’ve always wanted. Plus, it makes your bathroom appear light, airy, and less cluttered.

Timeless Design Trends To Consider For Your Kitchen Remodel Project

From white paints to shaker style cabinets, which drawer organizers to use and more, Advantage Services has been building amazing kitchen renovations in Denver for 20 years!

Lets get started with your Denver kitchen remodel!

            Neutral Paint Colors

The classic white kitchen is sometimes critiqued for being a little boring—but there's one solid reason to opt for this color in the kitchen: It will never go out of style. According to Houzz's trend report, a whopping 43 percent of renovating homeowners opted for white cabinets. Not sure which shade of white to go for? Check out these six white paints designers swear by (plus four other options if you're feeling bold).

            Shaker-Style Cabinets

Known for their simple design and recessed-panel doors, Shaker cabinets have been in-style for more than 100 years. Shaker cabinets are popular in farmhouse kitchens, but they will also work with a variety of home decor styles.

            Drawer and Cabinet Organizers

I'm calling it: Organization will never go out of style. And while features like built-in baking sheet dividers and pull-out cabinet drawers haven't been around for that long, when hidden behind unfussy cabinet fronts, these functional features are a must-have for timeless kitchens.

            Choose Natural Materials

Adding in natural materials like wood and stone will ground the space and keep it classic. If you want a timeless kitchen, resist the urge to create an ultra-modern look full of shiny stainless steel and engineered materials.

            White Marble or Quartz Countertops

White marble and quartz will always be an elegant choice for kitchen and bath countertops.

            Subway Tile

Subway tile is not only versatile enough to work with many different decor styles, but you probably won't get sick of it in five years (after all, the look's been around for over 100 years!). While it may be tempting to go with a trendy backsplash, like metallic tiles, sea glass, or bright geometric tiles, opt for something a little simpler if you want a backsplash with staying power.

This will make your life so much easier. Ask friends for recommendations
and take references. “Tender your building works with at least three builders,”
says Viki Lander. “It’s the only way to ensure you are getting good value for
your project.”

Bredenkamp’s advice is that if one quote is much cheaper than the
rest you should be suspicious and treat it with caution. “If a price sounds too
good to be true, it generally is,” he says.

What with builders, architects, party wall surveyors and building control
costs, professional fees will add a big chunk to your outlay. But unless you
really understand the process, don’t skimp on experts if you are doing a big
project.

“If you are undertaking a large project, especially one running
well into six figures, a quantity surveyor is worth his or her weight in gold,”
he says. “They can drill down on the numbers to a level of detail that a
builder won’t and this can really help you get your budgeting right and your
costs low.”

            6. Signed, sealed, and delivered

Once you have a builder in place, don’t go on a handshake. Draw up a contract
detailing exactly what they are going to be doing and how long it will
take. “A building contract acts as a framework for the contractor to
undertake the work and for you to monitor progress,” says Gruff’s Emily
Burnett.

Of course during the build things can, and will, change, but a
contract at least means you start out singing from the same hymn sheet. Your
contract should also include a payment plan – a timetable of when the builder
will invoice you during the work, and for how much.

            7. Don’t forget the small stuff

When you are working out how much the whole thing costs, include every little
thing. It might sound overly pernickety, but it is astonishing how much door
handles, light switches, towel rails and bookshelves can add to costs. “Don’t
forget to add VAT,” says Ensoul’s Viki Lander. “Most quotes from builders and
suppliers come in excluding VAT. It sounds obvious but it adds 20 per cent to
your project costs, so make sure you include it in your sums.”

            8. Supply and demand

Shop around when buying materials for your project. “I tend to try to use
suppliers who are as far out of London as possible,” says Ben Wilson.
“Invariably their prices are lower, as they aren’t paying for expensive London
premises. I also try to avoid mentioning that my projects are based in central
London, at least on the initial enquiry. Some suppliers are happy to raise
their quotes if they know the products are ending up in an expensive part of
the country.”

            9. Prepare for emergencies

Things can, and inevitably will, go wrong, and that means that
costs are going to rise. You must, must, must have some money tucked away to
cover unexpected extra costs or you could end up with a half-built home. Jeff
Kahane suggests a minimum of five per cent of the total build cost, and ideally
around 10 per cent.

            10. Should you stay or should you go?

Most architects and builders advise you to move out for the duration of the
work – they don’t want you under their feet and can get it done quicker in an
empty property. Living amid a build will also be stressful and very, very
dusty. Unless you have ultra-kind friends and/or relatives with enough room for
you, the kids, pets and all your furniture, this is going to mean a return to
the wonderful world of renting.

Kahane says the decision on whether to stay put depends on the
size of your property. “With a large house the scope sometimes exists to divide
the works into two or even three phases, so as to minimise rental costs,” he
says.

“The first phase, where the builders are doing all the external
prep work; the second where the clients retreat to occupy maybe half the
property and the builder sets up a micro-kitchen (often at minimal cost) using cannibalised
elements of the old kitchen, and the third phase, where they vacate
completely.”

The body content Quartz countertops and granite countertops are two of the most popular options available on today’s market. Both surfaces are some of the most beautiful you can install in your home and are very durable. But how do the two countertop materials compare in terms of heat resistance? That is the question that this guide will answer through the information below.

How Much Heat Can Quartz Handle?

While quartz will not burn from the smallest amount of heat, you should not expose the surface to excessive heat. Quartz is an engineered stone that is made by combining about 90 percent ground natural quartz with roughly 10 percent polyresin. Placing hot objects on a quartz countertop, such as hot pans and hot pots, can cause significant damage. If you place very hot items on your quartz countertop, it will result in burn marks and discoloration. This is because excessive heat melts the resin used in the surface.

While you should be extremely careful with hot items around your quartz countertops, you will not have to worry as much with granite countertops. This is not to say that you should be reckless, but granite is much more heat resistant than quartz. In fact, granite is one of the most heat resistant materials you can install in your home. Although this is the case, it is always a good idea to use trivets and hot pads when setting down hot items on any countertop.

Quartz is a great material for countertops because of its beauty, easy maintenance requirements, stain resistant and scratch resistant properties. That said, it is often not the top choice for kitchen countertops because of its sensitivity to excessive heat. To prevent heat damage with quartz countertops, make sure to use trivets and hot pads if you do have the surfaces in your kitchen. Quartz countertops should also not be installed outside, due to exposure to direct sunlight that can damage the material.

Is Heat Damage an Issue with Granite Countertops?

Granite countertops do not often have issues related to excessive heat. In addition, you should not have issues with staining if you re-apply a sealant on an appropriate basis (typically around once per year).

Quartz countertops, backsplashes and other surfaces are a great option for lower-traffic areas of the home, such as bathrooms. Keep in mind that you can install them in the kitchen as well, but you will need to make sure you exercise increased caution.

In terms of heat resistance, granite is the much better choice. The natural stone surfaces can withstand much more heat than quartz can, which makes the material an ideal fit for the kitchen. In general, natural stone countertops are much better at handling heat than engineered stone options.

In general, quartz is more expensive than granite. Engineered stone countertops may not have the ‘classic’ appeal that natural stone holds, but the surfaces are gorgeous, durable and easy to care for – all qualities that are ideal to homeowners. Quartz typically costs between $50 to $120 per square foot, while granite costs between $35 to $75 per square foot.

Granite can be found in hundreds of colors and styles. That said, quartz can be found in many colors and styles as well. Both options virtually ensure that you will find something that is a nice fit for your home.

Installing quartz countertops or granite countertops in your home is a great choice. Both surfaces are highly regarded for their beauty, durability and low maintenance requirements, among many other positive qualities. When it comes to completing your home improvement project, both options are ideal. While granite has the edge when it comes to heat resistance, quartz offers many benefits of its own.

How to change out an old Vanity!

Along with the kitchen, the bathrooms offer the best return on dollars invested in a renovation. And one of the easiest ways to update your bathroom look is to replace the vanity, countertop, sink, and faucet with a clean-looking new unit. For a few hundred dollars you can make your bathroom look like a million bucks.

The first step in this easy renovation is to remove the old vanity, but the next step is to install the new vanity, countertop, and sink.

           Vanity Basics

Vanities most commonly come in two styles: vessel style and cabinet style.

After you buy the vanity and take it home, carefully cut open the box, following the instructions are shown on the carton to ensure that you don't damage the finish of the vanity cabinet. Usually, when you buy a vanity kit, it will include the base cabinet as well as the countertop and sink that are separate from the cabinet. There may also be a separate backsplash piece. Remove all the packing and place the countertop/sink unit upside down on the carpet or some other soft surface to protect it until you need it.

           Locate the Wall Studs

Your vanity needs to be firmly anchored to wall studs, so the first step is to find the position of those studs in the wall behind the vanity cabinet.

Using an electronic stud finder, locate at least one wall stud on the wall behind the vanity location. Mark the center of the stud. Repeat the process to find a second stud if possible (studs are typically 16 inches center-to-center).

If the vanity is boxed in by a sidewall, also find the wall studs in the sidewall.

           Prepare to Attach the Vanity

           1.	Mark the height of the top of the vanity base cabinet on the back wall (as well as the sidewall if you have a corner installation). If no dimension was provided in the instructions, measure the actual cabinet and use that dimension. Measure from the floor to the top of the base cabinet (not including the countertop). Use a standard level to lightly mark the wall at the height of the vanity cabinet.

          2.	Once the height is marked off, place the vanity cabinet into position. If the vanity is anchored to the back wall only, make sure to position the cabinet so that the vanity top will have an equal overhang on each side.

          3.	If the vanity will be boxed in by a sidewall, too (as in our demonstration), place the vanity cabinet so the countertop will touch the sidewall and overhang on the opposite side. (You will have to test fit the countertop to determine this).

          4.	With the vanity in position, use a level to ensure the vanity is level both side-to-side and front-to-back. If necessary use wood shims driven under the cabinet to level it.

          5.	Secure the cabinet to the back wall with two 2-inch wallboard screws driven through the mounting strip in the back of the cabinet and into the wall studs.

Preparing for Filler Strip (If Needed)

Where the cabinet is positioned against a sidewall leaving a gap to be filled, you will need to measure and cut a narrow filler strip to fill in this gap, as shown here. This may involve shaping the filler strip to fit around a baseboard or coved tile piece at the bottom of the cabinet.

You will first cut a filler strip, then scribe the profile of the baseboard onto the strip, then cut out that profile so the filler strip fits perfectly in the space.

Making and Attaching a Filler Strip

           0.	Cut a filler strip to the overall length and width of the gap between the cabinet frame and the sidewall. Some vanity kits may come with filler strip material made of the same material as the face frame of the cabinet. Or, you may need to buy some wood stock of the same type as the face frame, then cut it to the right size and finish it to match the cabinet.

          1.	Trim the filler strip to the width of the gap. If you have a curved cove base tile as shown here, use a small profile gauge to "copy" the profile of the baseboard.

          2.	Transfer the shape onto the wood filler strip by tracing it with a pencil.

          3.	Using a manual coping saw or jigsaw, carefully cut out the shape of the cove base from the filler strip.

          4.	Test-fit the filler strip and adjust as necessary.

          5.	Once the filler strip fits precisely, sand, stain and finish the wood strip to match the base cabinet face frame.

          6.	Attach the filler strip to the cabinet with screws driven through the inside edge of the cabinet face frame and into the edge of the filler strip. Ideally, the filler strip should look like a continuation of the face frame.

Fasten the Side of the Vanity to the Sidewall

Although this step is sometimes omitted, it is best to anchor the side of the vanity cabinet to the sidewall, as well as securing the cabinet to the back wall. But because there is a gap between the side of the cabinet and the wall, you'll need to shim out the gap for support before driving screws.

          0.	Cut two wood spacer blocks to a width about 1/8 inch short of the distance from the vanity side to the wall.

          1.	Place two wood shims between the wood spacer blocks and the wall, driving them together slightly to create a snug fit.

          2.	Drive a drywall screw into the cabinet side and into the wall at a stud location, making sure the screw is long enough to extend about one inch into the stud.

           Install the Vanity Top

If the sink is separate from the countertop rather than an integral piece, attach it to the countertop before installing the countertop on the vanity.

          0.	Also, attach the faucet and drain fittings. It is much easier to install these components on a detached countertop than do it after the countertop is in place.

          1.	Place a small amount of silicone sealant/caulk on the bottom surface of the countertop at each corner, where it will rest on the cabinet. Then set the countertop/sink assembly in place onto the cabinet. If the vanity is installed just against a back wall, make sure countertop overhangs equally on each side. If the cabinet is boxed in by a sidewall as well, put the countertop tightly against the sidewall, with the overhang falling on the open side.

          2.	Make sure the vanity top is now in the final position you desire, with the back of the countertop firmly against the back wall.

          3.	It is not usually necessary to anchor the countertop to the cabinet in any other way since the silicone caulk will bond it to the cabinet. Some vanity kits, though, come with brackets that screw to the bottom of the countertop from beneath the sink. If your vanity came with these brackets, attach them now.

Once the countertop assembly is in place, hook up the faucet water supply. How this is done will depend on the style and manufacturer of your faucet, but essentially it involves connecting flexible supply tubes to run from shutoff valves to the tailpieces on the faucet.

Also, connect the drain trap fittings to the branch drain from beneath the sink.

If your vanity came with a separate backsplash, now is the time to install it:

          0.	Apply a bead of silicone sealant/caulk in a serpentine pattern on the back of the backsplash.

          1.	Press the backsplash firmly into place against the wall.

          2.	Install a bead of silicone caulk along the cracks between the backsplash and the wall, and also along the crack between the bottom of the backsplash and the countertop.

          3.	Let the caulk cure 24 hours.

          4.	If you have a granite or marble vanity top use a stone sealer before using the vanity.
